Taverns played a unique role in colonial times. There is nothing like them today. They were uniquely American. They weren’t just drinking establishments although the alcohol was both an attraction and a reason for criticism. They were the restaurants, motels, Starbucks, and community centers of their day. The American Revolution was born and reared in them. Railroads and prosperity were their demise. James Johnston has studied and written about them – and has frequented a few – and will share his research and experiences.
